The Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) was released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on May 9th this year. Ånund Killingtveit, CEDREN Vice Director and professor at NTNU’s Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, has contributed to this report as one of the lead authors and will give an overview over its key findings.

The IPCC was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and acts a scientific, intergovernemental body to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts. It reviews and assesses the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change. The goal of the SRREN report has been to assess existing literature on the contribution of six renewable energy sources to the mitigation of climate change. It is intended to provide policy relevant information to governments, intergovernmental processes and other interested parties.
